Forums might drive huge traffic and that would bring lot of refferals, but it should have more members with excellent topics. Have you ever made a 1000 referrals for any site in your life?

If people see your site on social media and give it a "like", that's a referral of sorts. In fact, when people see likes, they're more likely to check the link.

I'm not really sure about referral marketing. Isn' this like network marketing or like writing product reviews online and getting people to buy your product based on user experience? I think that if you have genuinely used the product and recommend it this would work. However I find in most cases this method of marketing does not work in the long term. I have done network marketing and it is the hardest type of marketing. At some point you stop advertising the product and start advertising the financial incentive your referral will earn if they buy the product and refer another person. Off course unless their is no financial incentive this may work.

Bottom line, referral marketing can become fake - as the referrals might just want money.
